Chez les Adadi, la musique demeure au cœur de la sociabilité : à travers des techniques vocales et instrumentales remarquables (arc musical, guimbarde, gong et tambour), elle permet le partage des peines et des joies, dans la sphère intime et collective.

L’île d’Atauro compte environ 10000 habitants, répartis en trois groupes ethnolinguistiques dont seuls les Adadi (2000 personnes environ) ont conservé une pratique musicale variée, bien qu’elle soit (ainsi que leur langue) en grand danger d’extinction ; ces musiques, enregistrées
entre 2019 et 2023 dans le cadre d’un projet collaboratif avec les habitants, n’ont encore jamais fait l’objet d’une publication.

La musique rythme les cheminements à pied vers les champs, agrémente la moisson du vin de palme matin et soir. Souvent, elle provoque les larmes, mais adoucit la tristesse et intensifie la joie lors des célébrations qui incluent toutes les classes d’âge et tous les genres.
Malgré une interruption brutale de la transmission en 1974 par les missionnaires chrétiens, certains chants rituels interdits subsistent encore dans les mémoires.

Among the Adadi, music remains at the heart of sociability: through remarkable vocal and instrumental techniques (musical bow, guimbard, gong and drum), it enables them to share their sorrows and joys, in the intimate and collective sphere.

The Atauro island has around 10,000 inhabitants, divided into three ethno-linguistic groups, of which only the Adadi (around 2,000 people) have preserved a varied musical practice, despite the fact that it (and their language) is in serious danger of extinction. This music, recorded between 2019 and 2023 as part of a collaborative project with the inhabitants, has never been published before.

The music gives rhythm to the walks to the fields, and enhances the harvest of palm wine morning and evening. It often brings tears to the eyes, but softens sadness and intensifies joy at celebrations that include all age groups and genders.
Despite an abrupt interruption in transmission in 1974 by Christian missionaries, certain forbidden ritual songs are still remembered.
